Minneapolis Interview Project - Life stories through a social justice lens
MIP aims for 100 life-stories that reveal hidden histories of inequality and the struggle for social justice in Minneapolis. Those interviewed have lived, worked, engaged institutions, and/or worked on grassroots campaigns in Minnesota’s biggest city. The stories are true personal experiences, as asserted by the interviewees. All have much to teach us about inequality and the struggle for social justice in Minneapolis.

Government Information

Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage
In 2015, the Council was renamed the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage. Prior to this, the Council was called the Council on Black Minnesotans. The name was changed to be more inclusive of the African descent diaspora that resides in Minnesota. The Council is tasked with making sure Minnesotans of African heritage fully and equitable benefit from the policies and procedures of the State of Minnesota. To put it simply, we serve as an liaison between the the State's government and it's African heritage community.  The Council has worked for the past 41 years to push forth and advocate for legislation and polices that benefit our community. As you explore our website, you will learn about the achievements of the Council and the people behind the work.
Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans
The Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans is an executive branch, non-cabinet agency tasked with the responsibility of working for the implementation of economic, social, legal, and political equality of Asian Pacific Minnesotans. Our primary customers are the Governor, the Legislature, state agencies, and Asian Pacific organizations and citizens.

Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs
MCLA is a state agency that advises the government on matters of interest to Latinos who live in Minnesota. It is a bridge of communication and collaboration between Latinos and the government, the private sector and nonprofits.

Minnesota Indian Affairs Council
The mission of the Indian Affairs Council (MIAC) is to protect the sovereignty of the 11 Minnesota Tribes and to ensure the well-being of American Indian citizens throughout the state of Minnesota. Established in 1963, the MIAC provides a liaison office to the eleven sovereign tribal nations and state government. The council also advises and makes recommendations to state policy makers, including the Governor and Legislature. The MIAC proposes the yearly agenda for the annual Governor/Tribal Leader summit. The MIAC also fulfills duties found in MS 307.09, through its Cultural Resources program. The Cultural Resources program works to protect Indian gravesites and burial mounds statewide.

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) monitors environmental quality, offers technical and financial assistance, and enforces environmental regulations. The agency finds and cleans up spills or leaks that can affect our health and environment. Staff develop statewide policy, and support environmental education.
Minnesota State Demographic Center
The Minnesota State Demographic Center (SDC), part of the Minnesota Department of Administration, is the main provider of demographic data and analysis for the state of Minnesota. The SDC assists policymakers, state and local governments, businesses, nonprofits, the media, and all Minnesotans locate and understand the demographic data they need to make smart decisions.

The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) was founded in 1987 to meet the increasing information needs of nonprofits and to convene nonprofits to address issues facing the sector. It is the largest state association of nonprofits in the U.S. Through MCN, nonprofits join together across interest areas to work on issues of common concern to all.
