What are Resource Guides?

"Resource Guide" is one of many titles for a virtual bookshelf of resources.  Other libraries may refer to them as "Research Guides" or "Libguides".

Within library buildings, there are physical bookshelves full of organized materials to check out.  Resource Guides serve the same function, only digitally.  One or more library workers find and research a number of different types of electronic media, organize them, and then put them on these digital bookshelves under a subject or topic heading.  Speaking more literally, Resource Guides are web pages or websites that contain carefully curated and sorted lists of links (and other media) about a subject, course, or topic.

There are a few different applications for making Resource Guides.  ATCC uses an application called SubjectsPlus.

Tips for Navigating Resource Guides

Resource Guides are meant to be jumping-off points for your research, whether you're conducting searches for something academic, personal, or just for fun.  Here are some tips for using Resource Guides effectively:
  • Pay attention to the icons next to links -- these indicate things like: whether or not a resource is going to require you to log in, and whether or not a resource offers you access to full-text articles.
  • Note the difference between Subject Guides, Course Guides, and Topic Guides.  Subject Guides cover a broad range of information and resources related to a particular ATCC program major.  Course Guides are for individual classes.  And Topic Guides are for everything else.
  • Be willing to explore a little bit.  Clicking on one link probably won't get you exactly the answer you're looking for.  Anything listed as a featured resource is going to be more popular, but that isn't necessarily a guarantee that it will contain the information or tools that you need.
  • Utilize effective search practices when accessing databases.
    • Pay attention to the language commonly used to describe a topic; if you're not getting many results with one word, try a synonym, or try checking a different database.
    • Autofill in search bars is your friend -- if you're seeing results autofill while you're searching that indicates that there are results containing that key word or phrase in that database.
    • If you're getting too many search results, try narrowing your search with Boolean phrases (AND, OR).
    • If you need full text for something, make sure that option is selected in the database when you're conducting your search.  It's frustrating when you find a title that catches your interest only to discover that only the abstract is available.
    • Check other resources for full text; one database might not provide full text access while another one does.
